I've always enjoyed attending larger community events, but before this story, I had never even been aware of our city's annual Dr. King celebration. When writing this story, I wanted to emphasize the sense of community and the joy that was so prevalent at the celebration. Not only was I introduced to new community members, but community leaders. Although I had never met the president of Oviedo Citizens in Action, the organization that plans the event, I took a risk and went up to her during the event to ask for an interview---she was elated. This story built up my confidence in engaging with my community, even if it can be nerve-racking.
