News Writing
"Can we change the channel?"
This was a plea I often made with my parents when I wanted to watch Disney Channel re-runs, and their response has always stuck with me.
"We need to see what's happening in the world."
I may have found it annoying then, but now it is a statement I live by---one that we all should. Without coverage of current events, we are unaware of serious issues in our society, local or global.
I aim to use my writing to raise awareness of local and state events, growing my peers' political and societal consciousness.
Feature Writing
By far, feature writing is my favorite aspect of journalism.
I love exploring new topics, even if they're hard to handle. Personal pronouns, diversity on campus, and nicotine use aren't necessarily enjoyable to read about---but it's necessary.
The more stories I've written, the more I've learned about my campus and community, and I hope my stories shine a much needed light on important issues.
Opinion Writing
As someone who avoids confrontation, being opinionated was once a weakness.
Forcing myself to research hard-to-handle issues led me to form more well-rounded and deep-rooted opinions---even if they differed from my peers. In addition to my opinion pieces, my column "Fired Up," which highlights political and environmental crises across the globe, has further cultivated my passion for social activism.
Sometimes, you need to be a little angry, and opinion articles are my necessary outlet.
